The First Crusade

  • The massacre of 3000 Christians in Jerusalem prompted the First Crusade.
  • The First Crusade was known as the peoples crusade.
  • Led by Count Raymond of Toulouse and Godfrey of Bouillon
  • Main focus of the Crusade was to capture back the Holy City otherwise known as Jerusalem.
  • In July of 1099 the Christians attacked the Muslims and took over Jerusalem.


The Second Crusade


  • Lasted 2 years from 1147-1149.
  • The cause of the Second Crusade was due to the fall and Massacre at Edessa.
  • Led by King Louis VII of France and Conrad III of Germany
  • The Second Crusade failed though due to the attack of the Turks at Asia Minor.

The Third Crusade


  • Lasted from 1189-1192
  • The Crusade was started due to the capture of Jerusalem by Saladin in 1187.
  • King Richard I raised money for the Third Crusade.
  • Death of the German Emperor Frederik Barbarossa
  • Captured Acre in 1191
  • Truce was made between Saladin and King Richard.



The Fourth Crusade


  • Lasted from 1202-1261
  • The Crusaders and Venetians joined forces to take over Egypt over the Muslims
  • In 1204 the Crusaders stormed and took over Constantinople.
  • Two centuries later the city fell to the Turks.
